Today I spent the morning floating a stretch of the Rogue River upstream of Shady Cove to observe current water conditions and fish holding structure as part of the ongoing RogueFlyFish river research project.
The river is still running relatively clean for this time of year, with visibility holding at several feet in slower seams and tailouts. Current seams are well defined, particularly along outside bends and mid-river gravel bars.
The purpose of this trip was not necessarily to put numbers on the board, but to better understand where fish may be staging and how the structure of the river is setting up as we move toward spring.
Field Observations
- Several outside-bend buckets showed excellent holding depth and slower current.
- Water clarity remained strong enough for egg presentations to stay visible in moderate depth.
- River traffic was light, allowing extended time studying structure rather than simply covering water.
During the float I tested egg patterns tied with Eggstasy fiber and tungsten bead heads. These heavier setups allow flies to reach deeper runs quickly without requiring excessive split shot.
The trip also provided an opportunity to photograph several access points and note subtle changes in gravel bars compared with last season. Those observations will be added to the RogueFlyFish access guide over time.
Even when fish are not actively feeding, time spent studying water structure and testing patterns is part of building a practical knowledge base for Rogue River anglers.
