The Rogue runs roughly 215 miles from the Cascade Range near Crater Lake to the Pacific at Gold Beach. What makes it a fishing river rather than just a scenic one is a set of sea-run fish that have used it for thousands of years: Chinook and coho salmon, and both summer and winter steelhead. Everything below is a plain-language reference to those runs, the river they move through, and the changes people have made to it.
The Rogue carries two distinct Chinook runs. Spring Chinook enter the river from about March through June, hold in cold pools through the summer, and spawn in the fall. Fall Chinook come in from roughly August into October and spawn soon after. Historically the spring run was the larger of the two; today it depends heavily on Cole M. Rivers Hatchery below Lost Creek Dam.
Coho salmon in the Rogue are part of the Southern Oregon / Northern California Coast population that is listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. Wild coho are protected; hatchery coho are marked with a clipped adipose fin. Always check current ODFW regulations before keeping any salmon.
Summer steelhead are the backbone of the Rogue's fly fishery. They enter the river from spring through fall and are present and catchable across a long season. Winter steelhead run later, generally December through March, and are more common in the lower river and tributaries.
The Rogue is one of only a handful of rivers — with the Klamath, Trinity, Eel, and Mad in northern California — that produce half-pounders: immature summer steelhead that return to freshwater after only two to four months at sea, usually 10 to 16 inches long. They spend the winter in the river without spawning, drop back to the ocean in spring, and return again later as full-size adults. For anglers it means a lot of aggressive, willing fish in the upper river from late summer into fall.
For most of the twentieth century the mainstem Rogue was broken up by low irrigation and power dams. Three of them came out in three years:
Elk Creek Dam, an unfinished flood-control dam on a tributary, was notched in 2008 to let fish pass. With Gold Ray gone, the Rogue now flows unimpeded from Lost Creek Dam to the ocean — about 157 miles — for the first time in over a century.
The Savage Rapids removal was driven by irrigation math as much as by fish. Replacing the dam with electric pumps let the Grants Pass Irrigation District keep delivering water while giving salmon and steelhead an open channel and eliminating the fish losses at the old fish ladders and screens.
Lost Creek Dam (officially William L. Jess Dam), completed in 1977, forms Lost Creek Lake on the upper Rogue. It is a federal flood-control and flow project, not a hydropower dam in the usual sense, and it is the one large structure left on the mainstem.
Its releases shape the fishery below it. Cold water drawn from deep in the reservoir keeps the upper Rogue cool through the summer, which supports a year-round trout and steelhead fishery in a stretch that would otherwise run warm. The dam also flattens the river's natural swings — lower winter floods, higher late-summer flows — which is why the upper Rogue stays fishable when unregulated rivers blow out or drop too low. Cole M. Rivers Hatchery sits just downstream and produces much of the river's hatchery Chinook, coho, and steelhead.

The Rogue was one of the original eight rivers named in the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. The designated stretch runs 84 miles, from about seven miles west of Grants Pass to about eleven miles east of Gold Beach. Within it, the roughly 34-mile wild section from Grave Creek to Foster Bar is managed by the BLM and requires a permit to float during the summer season.
Salmon carry ocean nutrients inland. After spawning they die in the river, and their carcasses feed everything from insects and juvenile fish to bald eagles, black bears, otters, and the streamside forest itself. Strong runs make a measurably richer watershed; weak runs quietly starve it.
Juvenile salmon also depend on slow, off-channel water — side channels, spring seeps, and old beaver ponds — for rearing and for refuge from winter floods.
